Fishing Report - 02/02/07
Hello from the tropics,
We had a two week run this week at Pesca Panama. Positioning the Barge at Coiba for two weeks allowed the first group (week) to fish their way out to Coiba as the second group fished the Coiba area and back to town. Joining us on the first trip was returning guest "Team Borracho"...Larry Schmidt and his sons Larry (meat face), Matt, and Matt's brother in law Drew Reger. Also onboard this week was returning guest Rusty Zucatti, his father Hank, Rich Kelley, and Gary Siemons. Last but not least joining Pesca Panama for the first time was father son team Mark and Mike Fisher, John Fisher and Pete Germano.
The crew started with a bang with outstanding bottom fishing at Ladrones Island. Landing up to 25 Mullet snapper per boat, and several Cubera everyone had the chance to see some action!
The offshore fishing the first week proved to be challenging, but it did have its high points. Fishing with Captain Chico on the second day Gary went to battle and landed a nice 150 lb Tuna. Several nice small to medium Tuna were taken during the week on top-water, and Larry ended up with the "Top water fish of the week" at an estimated 90lbs! Nice job Larry! Small groups of Sailfish also provided the offshore anglers some action, landing up to 3 of these scrappy fighters a day.
The real action during the week came from the bottom...Landing, and releasing, dozens of Cubera, multiple Amberjacks, and even a couple of small grouper.
Joining us for the second week we welcomed back the Brune brothers - Will and Tim, Andy Goode, John Norris, Les Colman, Garry Morfit, brother Mason Morfit, Joe Wishcamper, John Conyngham, Graig Battle, Charles Gill, and Des Fitzgerald and Mike Augat. Fishing their way to Coiba on the first day the boats had mixed success. Fishing with Captain Chico on the first day Mason and Les ended up with seven nice size Cubera Snapper. Team Offshore...Will and Tim stuck to their guns and spent most of the week offshore with anticipations of Tuna action and although they did not find wide open Tuna action they did have some success with small Tuna to 30 pounds on top-water. Team Brune also had some good success with Sails raising 12 and landing 5 on the fifth day!
One of the highlights of the trip was when Graig, Des and Jo and Mason had the opportunity to enjoy some fly casting from the beach at Coiba on the second day...Spectacular fights from a pair of Jacks, and a Snook gave the guys a good look at the potential for action from the sand!! Bo also had the chance to boat his first Pacific Black Snook estimated at 18 pounds! Congrats Bo!
As good as the inshore fishing was one man this week dominated the Pool of luck in the offshore fishery...Les ended the week with two assist on Tuna over 100 pounds, one nice Sail and an estimated 300 lb Blue Marlin that he landed on a light stand up rod with a Shimano TN40 spooled with 50lb line. Congratulations on a great week of fishing Les.
Thanks to Hank and the boys, Team Borracho, the Brune brothers and Mike Augat for a great couple of weeks of fishing!
Keep Casting,
Travis
